Hearts of Gold’s mission and purpose is reimagining the future of homeless mothers and their children, together, by helping them to become confident and self-sufficient as they prepare to transition out of the New York City shelter system to permanent homes.
The impact of homelessness is profound: our moms feel anger, self-blame, sadness, fear, hopelessness— and their children often bear the brunt of these emotions.
To help navigate this trauma, we provide a variety of basic supplies upon first engagement: MetroCards (for work, school & tutoring travel), food & groceries, clothing, furniture, school supplies and much more.
Our moms need—but often lack—the basic life skills that help deal with the challenges of their personal, educational or professional lives.
We run a number of programs to support these families' growth, and to help them recognize and break self-defeating habits: financial literacy courses; parenting skills workshops; a summer enrichment camp for our teens; and more.
Finally, we offer a suite of programs designed to create sustainable change for our moms and kids.
For moms, this means job training at our retail store the Thrifty HoG , job interview workshops (coming soon) and consulting on workwear.
For kids, we have our Learning Center, offering free tutoring, meals & educational trips 6 days
